Here is a recommended list of foods for you: Be sure to follow all recommendations as your turtle's health depends on it. I am concerned about her general health and the habitat which may not be meeting her needs to stay healthy.ĭouble check the care sheet and write with any questions. They do not hibernate naturally during the summer months, so I think something else is going on. Turtles normally hibernate when the days get shorter and temps get cooler. I would remove all rocks/gravel smaller than her had as turtles can and will eat rocks which can block their intestines. Spinach is a bad food b/c it contains oxalic acid which interferes with calcium absorption, something needed to form a strong shell. I check mine in the morning and at night.Ĭertain foods are bad, too. Get a separate thermometer and check her temps daily. Temperature is so important to keeping a turtle healthy!ĭO NOT rely on the thermometers on heaters. I hope the water temp and basing area temp is the same as recommended in the care sheet from the post above. She was probably reacting to the heater being broken. So keep the temps in the recommended range. Instead, they can use up their nutritional reserves/fat and actually start to starve. It is dangerous for a turtle to be in cooler temps that keep them from eating and moving normally but NOT cool enough to get to the metabolic state of true hibernation. The water was cooler but not cool enough to cause a real hibernation when turtles' metabolism nearly stops. ![]() The "hibernation" might be a result of not having a heater in the tank.
